Police and Crime Commissioners
Elections to appoint the first Police and Crime Commissioners (PCCs) took place across England and Wales on 15 November 2012.
This section of the website contains information on how we will work with PCCs and what information will be available to them, the public and other stakeholders. It also includes details of meetings held with prospective and declared candidates in the run up to the election.
How we will work with PCCs

Meetings held with prospective and declared candidates
Earlier this year, all prospective PCC candidates had the opportunity to meet the HMI covering their force area. These were one-to-one meetings and allowed prospective candidates to learn more about HMIC, our role and how we can support PCCs once in office.
We met with those who were considering becoming a PCC (prospective candidates) and those who had officially put themselves forward (declared candidates).

Information HMIC can provide to PCCs, the public and other stakeholders
HMIC publishes information on the whole breadth of policing activity, from national reports on public order policing or how each force balances its books, to year-by-year data on how many times shoplifting offences have been recorded in each area. We monitor force performance in order to encourage and drive local accountability and transparency.

- A review of how your police authority prepared for the transition to PCCs.
- All the inspection reports for your force – from a review of the quality of its crime recording to an inspection of how it tackles ASB.
- Joint (with other criminal justice inspectorates) and other national reports where your force is mentioned.
- Value for money profiles that provide benchmarking information on what the police are spending their budgets on, staffing levels by grade and function, and outputs and outcomes in a comparable format. (updated October 2012)
